Don’t Let These 3 Myths of Entrepreneurship Hold You Back
BY MEMMA LOMAS
There are whole lotta myths of entrepreneurship out there that are seen to be “truths” or rules”. Some of them are written as well-meaning guides. Some are dreamt up or imposed by us through our own (flawed) self-belief systems.
These myths though, can bog us down and scare us away from the things that make us great. The things that we have dreamt about. The things that we were put here to do.
See if any of the following 3 myths of entrepreneurship have shimmied their way into your mind, then get to kicking them to the kerb!
MYTH #1 – YOU NEED TO STICK TO THE PLAN
To be clear, I’m not talking about “Shiny object syndrome” where you avoid success by constantly starting new projects. Instead, I’m talking about listening to your gut when it tells you that your future lies somewhere else.
George Bernard Shaw said that “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” and if we’re not here to make change, then what are we here for?!
Being able to take decisive action on things and change course or adapt to situations is one of the most common traits in any successful entrepreneur. It’s not about chasing something new, it’s about recognising that what you’re doing isn’t working. For other people or you.
Some of the biggest breakthroughs come from making tweaks to an existing idea or product to make it better.
Take a moment and think about your situation right now. Is there anything you could do to make it better? What’s missing? Are you still happy? Could you be happier? How?
Asking these questions and following your truth is the best way to be where you want to be.
MYTH #2 – YOU NEED TO BE AN EXPERT TO BE RESPECTED
This is seriously one of the biggest, most debilitating myths of entrepreneurship around. The entrepreneur game is alllll about the growth baby and I mean Sexy-ass GROWTH! If you already know it all, well then there isn’t much room to get your sexy on now, is there?
Puh-LEASE don’t wait until you have learned absolutely everything there is to know about your field (is that ever even possible?) before you start making yourself known.
You may not be an expert on it all… but you are better than that. You have your own perspective on things, your own life experiences that are unique to you. The lessons that you have learned through these, and can use to help or teach others? That’s valuable right now.
This is a journey and your peeps want to go on an epic road trip with you, not just meet you at the destination. The respect comes from you genuinely trying to help others and having the integrity to do what you say you will.
MYTH #3 – YOU NEED TO BE AN EXTROVERT
When you think of successful entrepreneurs, you might think they’re uber-confident, limelight-loving babes who love to be the centre of attention. If that’s not you, then maybe you’ve had that creepy (slightly b*tchy) inner voice tell you that you can’t reach the same level of success.
Isn’t interesting then, that there are famously successful entrepreneurs who are/were killing it in business – and they’re self-professed introverts!
Now I’m not saying that extroverts don’t make great entrepreneurs, but the truth is, entrepreneurship is about taking something you love and helping to change the world – at least that’s my humble view of it.
There are platforms out there of every kind that can help you to build an audience full of people who not only get you, they are you. This is the age where connections are at our fingertips. If you don’t want to be surrounded and overshadowed by people you don’t connect with – you don’t have to be!
Find your crowd, show them who you are, and go for it!
