The #1 Quality You Need To Be A Successful Entrepreneur
BY AROOJ SHEIKH
THIS IS THE KEY TO BEING A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR…
Starting a company is hard. It’s filled with ups and downs, lefts and rights, and your energy and focus is pulled in every direction. There’s a new challenge every day, and no two days are ever the same. Some days, you’re struggling to figure out your go to market strategy or how to raise your next round of funding. Other days, you’ll have landed a huge client and you’re on the top of the world.
The thing about starting a company is that you wear several hats. Some days you’re the accountant, other days you’re the marketing person, and some days, you’re responsible for something you have no idea how to do. You get thrown into a new situation where you’re expected to figure it out and make it work.
This is why adaptability is the most important skill an entrepreneur needs to be successful. You need to be able to learn quickly, and problem solve your way out of sticky situations, which you will inevitably encounter.
For example: I’m the founder of a real estate tech startup based in Austin, TX. As a byproduct of building my company, I learned UI/UX design, design thinking, and product development. I picked up this skill completely through practice, and while I may not have formal education on the topic – I know it well enough to where I’ve served as a design mentor for hackathons, and I’ve run workshops on the topic.
I also consult for startups and small businesses – every company I work with has a new set of challenges, sometimes in new areas, sometimes in new industries, and sometimes there’s just a tight deadline – but because I’ve learned how to adapt to any situation I encounter, I can aptly handle anything thrown at me.
And of course, in both of these scenarios, I easily could’ve batted off the challenge. I could’ve easily told myself that’s something I didn’t know how to do, and not have bothered to try. But that’s how you learn. And you never truly become qualified to do something until you do it.
“you never truly become qualified to do something until you do it”
That’s the beauty of starting a company, is that you face new challenges every day. That also means you learn something new every day. This is one of the rare opportunities in which you go through exponential growth – an invaluable experience, which requires adaptability.
